New proposals to reduce whiplash epidemic
The ABI wants whiplash injuries are checked by a licensed medical professional, under new proposals unveiled today.
The insurer trade body said 1,500 people claim whiplash injury every day.
Recent figures from the Ministry of Justice consultation document December said that 70% of UK road accident personal injury claims for whiplash.
This compares to 47% in Germany, 32% in Spain and 3% in France.

That medical evaluation of whiplash claims would be conducted by a licensed medical expert. They would have to give their financial independence of plaintiff lawyers, take into account the circumstances of the collision instead of the plaintiff reported symptoms and trained in the latest techniques of diagnosis. Accreditation would be conducted by a Board of Directors composed of the Government, the judiciary, plaintiff interest groups, expansion joints and medical experts. The Board of Directors the accreditation process would develop and standardized medical reports, and arrange for the plaintiff whiplash to be examined. The small claims track threshold would increase from £ 1,000 to £ 5000 for all road traffic personal injury claims. ABI Deputy Director of motor and liability James Dalton said: "we believe that our proposals offer the best remedy for the UK's whiplash epidemic. Insurers want to make it easier and faster for real whiplash plaintiffs to fair compensation. But whiplash is notoriously difficult to diagnose, which means that it has become the fraud of choice for many people.
"Our proposals will ensure better medical assessment of whiplash claims, provide a quick, simple way of paying real claims; provide security for prosecutors and expansion joints and discouraging fraud that end up being paid through higher motor insurance premiums. "
LV = Managing Director John O'Roarke welcomed a recent decision by the Select Committee on transport to starting an inquiry into whiplash claims.
Research by the insurer last month showed that, on average, 49% of whiplash payouts to lawyers.
The insurer results also revealed that 24% of whiplash prosecutors would never have claimed if they hadn't put his party by a third party under pressure, and 87% of GPs say they have seen patients who they thought had an injury completely made up. CAR INSURANCE
O'Roarke said: "despite declining accident rates, insurers now receive twice as many claims for whiplash as they did ten years ago and it is ridiculous to claim that all these cases are real.
"Crash victims are under increasing pressure to make a compensation claim, or they have been injured or not. Those involved in a traffic accident are be contacted within hours of a crash and even in the hospitals where they receive care, with some victims to 350 times are approximated. The system is out of control and needs to be radically reformed. the transport Select Committee investigation is long overdue. "
