Matthews from Aviva Wilson starts a stir

Trevor Matthews will not seek re-election to the Board of Aviva on 2013 AVA

Trevor Matthews (pictured) is to step down from the Board of Directors of Aviva after just over two years, the insurer announced.

Matthews will not stand for re-election at the annual general meeting of 2013 later this year, and will step down from the Board before the AGM, Aviva said in a statement today, which also announced several other changes in the senior management team.

The news comes a month after Mark Wilson officially took the helm of Aviva as chief executive.

Matthews came in December 2011 Aviva UK chief executive. In April 2012, he was appointed Executive Director responsible for developed markets. Aviva confirmed that he in an advisory capacity for a number of months will continue in order to ensure a smooth transition of his responsibilities.

David McMillan, who at one point was considered as a possible competitor for the top job, has been named chief executive of Aviva Europe. McMillan will monitor the operations in Spain, Italy, Turkey, Aviva Poland, Lithuania and Russia, and President of the French Council of Aviva.

He was previously the Director of the transformation of the group, and before that chief executive of Aviva UK life operations. Aviva said that the designation recognized McMillan of "positive influence on the business during his time as Director of the transformation".

Wilson has also in some of his own people since becoming chief executive, with Nick Amin replaced McMillan as a group transformation Director and reporting directly Wilson. Amin was Wilson's right hand at American International Assurance and was closely involved in the preparation of the company for its initial public offering on the Hong Kong stock exchange in 2010.

Jason Windsor is also promoted to chief strategy and development officer, Aviva investors taking over Paul Abberley, the current interim chief executive. Pat Regan will continue as President of Aviva Investors in addition to his other duties as chief operating officer.

The changes are effective immediately and follow the announcement on January 28 at the appointment of Khor Hock Seng as chief executive of Aviva Asia. He will take on that role on 8 March with Aviva stating that his appointment reaffirmed its commitment to selected markets in Asia.

Wilson said the changes were aimed at ensuring Aviva had the "right people in the right jobs" and that Aviva had the best possible leadership team for its potential.

"David McMillan and Jason Windsor new roles recognize the power of their performance in 2012. Nick Amin and Khor Hock Seng are exceptional additions to the team. I would also like to thank Trevor Matthews for his major contribution to Aviva and wish him well for his future, "Wilson added.
